Hey, everyone,

We are on the road in Atlanta, GA today with just 2 days left of our 4 month tour. Since the beginning of the year we have covered both the east and west coast, been to Europe twice, and Mexico. We have had suprisingly good luck this time. Wracking up only one broken leg, a bronchitis epidemic, one staff infection, and 2 broken instruments (the broken instruments being by far the worst calamity!). On the bright side, we never lost any luggage and we didn't kill each other :) All joking aside though, we have had a tiring but very productive couple of months; meeting new people and going to new places.

We are starting to work on some new material which we are hoping to start recording in the fall. I'm sure we will probably do like last time and film while we are in studio which is always amusing. They tend to catch us at our best moments....disco dancing, playing out of tune, singing off pitch, pulling our hair out...Fun stuff! For those of you who missed the clips from Don't Believe, you can pull them up on http://www.youtube.com/cherryholmesband under "cherryholmes in the studio".

Hope you all are well.
Talk soon!

  1. Never attended a more energetic, yet talent-filled concert than the concert in Birmingham on Thursday night.
Cherryholmes is absolutely the most talented group in professional music today. If I may paraphrase Rush Limbaugh, Cherryholmes plays with "talent on loan from God."

  2. Thanks for adding blogging to your site and updating bios. Much appreciated. Saw you guys in Saddlebrooke, AZ this past March. Most Excellent! A few questions. To family: Is there one influence that dominates over others that shapes your future song direction (e.g. other genres of music, TN home base, family travels?) Cia: As an accomplished banjoist, and maintaining such a busy schedule, when do you find time to practice and what aspects do you generally focus on? Love your pickin. Best regards and safe travels.

  3. Awesome show at Georgia Tech Ferst Center last night! POWER GRASS!

Where can we find more info about the workshops for the Feb '10 Cruise?

  4. BTW, I really liked the cover of "Christine's Tune (Devil in Disguise)" at the Atlanta Georgia Tech show. Who's the Gram Parson's fan in the group? I bet you guys could do a mean version of "Still Feelin' Blue".

  5. Saw you in Macon Georgia. You would not play a Bill Monroe song by reequest. You looked more like a circus act.

  6. Hey, John, I guess you could say we are influenced by many differen genres of music. We have an appreciation for many styles. As far as practicing goes, I have always told people that the time should be divided up between playing things that you already know (like banjo tunes) and then focusing on learning a new lick or a new roll so that you're always learning. Speed is important too and not just playing fast. It's extremely important to always play at a consistant speed. If one part is hard so you play it slower, you need to play the whole piece at that tempo until you can work your speed up.

Randy, regarding the cruise workshops all I can tell you is that there will be 2 workshops during the week for each instrument, but they usually don't hand out the schedules until you get on the ship. The artists take turns as to who is teaching them so if you see the band line up that will give you an idea who is running them.

And Scouter, sorry we did not get your request in. It is quite possible we did not know your request or simply couldn't fit them all in....and even Mr. Monroe played in a circus tent :)

  7. AH! A blog What a novel idea. I think I shall like this place just fine...

Cia- You are my fav banjoist besides J.D. and Jim Mills. I have learned your lead on "Goodbye" and BOY is it a doozy! I love trying (note: trying) to emulate your style when I play banjo.

Keep up the good work! (Talent on loan from God... haha. I agree.)

  9. Just went to your concert tonight at the Trails Shopping Center in Ormond Beach, FL, and was totally blown away. Your style, music, and stage presence is light years beyond what I am used to in this genre. I love it when bluegrass bands get away from the norm (the original Seldom Scene comes to mind, along with Alison Krauss and Union Station to name a few). Can't wait to see you tomorrow night along with Ralph Stanley, and the Lovell Sisters.

  10. Hi you guys. Saw you at the Ormond Beach show, and again the next night with Ralph Stanley. I was blown away! I'll be back whenever you're anywhere near here!

Two questions. Why did you end up playing after Ralph Stanley? Isn't that unusual? I'm guessing he wanted to get outa there because he wasn't feeling well. Second ... that Destination Daytona venue seemed difficult. Neither of the other band's sound systems could handle it, but you guys sounded great. How do you do it?

Thanks again for two great shows!

  13. Hey Dan and Shane,

Thanks for coming out to the shows last weekend. I'm not sure why they put us on last. Maybe Ralph requested it. As for the sound question, we had a really great sound tech with us, and she always makes us sound good!

  17. Hello Cia and family! How is everyone? Jack and I are doing well here in Ohio. We finally got to hear your great music in Nashville, Indiana the end of April! You all are awesome! I wanted to thank all of you for taking the time to smile, chat and sign my tank, when I know you were ready for the day to end a tad sooner than it did!
Jack wanted to thank Sandy again for answering his request of "Any old yodel will do".
    Take care, pattib

  19. Just received my Cherryholmes III CD here in Western Australia after waiting for a few weeks. It was well worth the wait.
    Thanks Cherryholmes.

  20. Greetings Cherryholmes;

I just wanted to let you know how thrilled I am with your music. I don't know how I've been missing you all these years but thanks to Ronnie Reno and his RFD-TV show I finally discovered you.

I am especially thrilled to see Molly fiddling with her natural hand. I'm left handed but I was forced to learn to play a guitar right handed as left handed people in my day were considered an emabarssment to a family of right handers and since we only had one guitar among us, it was either right handed or nothing. I did it but it hampered my ability to play well so I also concentrated on the piano, which I can play much better (can do a pretty good imitation of Floyd Cramer if you don't listen to close) but since you don't see pianos in blue grass groups that pretty much ruled out Blue Grass. I play mostly Southern Gospel and Folk now but I still love many of the Classical pieces and love the themes from movies. I would have loved to scored movies and compsed/arranged the orchestration with Percy Faith and Henry Mancini as well as others.

I write a lot of my own material (nothing professional. Just for my personal and local pleasure) and I have some home recording equipment on which I make some of my own CD's (again nothing professional, just personal enjoymnet). I like to see what I can come up with on my keyboard as I have to do it all so I use the Korg to produce the different instruments. I've never tried doing Blue Grass on it but since it has all the instrument sounds used on bluegrass, I might just give it a shot.

I have all your CD's and love them all but especially Black and White and Cherry Holmes III. Just can't get "You Don't Know What Love is" out of my mind. Not that I want to but I wake up with it running around in my head. Drives me crazy when I can't figure out the chord progressions in a song but I'll get it.

If the GOOD LOrd wills, I plan on seeing you in person for the first time in June and the Loveless Barn. I'm looking forward to it like a kid looking forward to Christmas.

Love you guys and I pray the Lord keeps you safe and healthy and keeps on giving you inspiration so you can pass it on to all us fans.

    GOD Bless.

    Kenny
